The Acorn Project

In 2023 we received a generous bequest to support activities which will change the lives of young people who face different challenges in school. The Acorn Bequest will enable us to train staff in school to support mental health and wellbeing needs as well as providing targeted support for students through forest school, equine therapy, gardening and other wellbeing activities.

Here are some of the projects this generous bequest has enabled us to support:

Horse Riding

A small group of girls to took part in some equine therapy and horse riding at Swinhoe Farm Riding Centre. The aim is to support small groups of students to develop confidence and skills to engage more positively at school. The donation not only paid for the riding lessons but also covered the prohibitive transport costs.

Here is what one student had to say:

We have all enjoyed an opportunity to do an activity that has helped us all with improving our confidence. When on a horse we forget about our worries and we have lots of fun and laughs while encouraging each other.

Wreath Making

Just before Christmas we supported a wreath making activity for a small group of students who would benefit from spending time together and being able to take something home that they would feel really proud of. This group and their form tutors worked with Wild With Love to make the wreaths and The Alnwick Garden provided the working space and hot chocolate to create a very special afternoon.

By enabling students to build relationships with each other and with staff we are removing barriers to learning. Form tutors had the opportunity to get to know the students better which will enable them to better support their individual needs in the classroom.
